The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) invited one of OII Australia’s Sydney-based members to its Human Rights 2011 event at the Sydney Town Hall on Monday 23rd May. In the lead up to the event, the AHRC had invited potential attendees to submit a question for the panel – United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, Aboriginal Elder Professor Patrick Dodson, and Paris Aristotle AM of the Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture.
Karin, our board member remarked to the AHRC staff member who phoned that they were courageous in allowing her to ask a question of High Commissioner Navi Pillay that may underscore the UN’s uneven inclusion of intersex people in its programs. Ms Pillay had made a speech about homophobia early this month but had not yet included intersex in her list of people adversely affected by homophobia.< In the event, Karin did not get the chance to ask her question. Nonetheless, we wish to thank the Australian Human Rights Commission for providing an opportunity to potentially engage with High Commissioner Pillay on intersex and hope that another opportunity to do so will arise.
