ILGA walks the talk of intersex inclusion:

A discussion forum will be organised in Brussels on 2 – 5 September 2011 to explore the characteristics of the Intersex Movement, its relationship with the international and regional organisations ILGA, ILGA-Europe and TGEU, and to develop agreements on key issues for advocacy.

The aim of the forum is to increase the awareness of intersex issues, and to agree on the advocacy priorities using a human rights position. It is hoped the forum will contribute to movement building, development of working relationships between the allies and drawing up an agreed action plan to advance on the key priorities.

These are some of the areas that will be explored:

• The various perspectives on intersexuality – gender queer, human rights, medical.
• Needs of the intersex community – what are the priorities?
• How might these needs be met and who is best placed to meet these identified needs?
• What are the various approaches to advancing equality for intersex people?
• Who do we need to work with – and at what level of intervention?
• How might the organisations work together to advance the identified priorities?
• Social change requiring intervention at various levels – who can do what?
• Working with each other and working with other organisations.
• Agreeing on a programme of work to further intersex equality and inclusion in LGBTI movement.

The working methods utilised will be a combination of individual, pair, small group and large group reflection, discussion and planning. There will be an emphasis on people getting to know each other so as to build stronger working relationships that will be the basis for future alliances and projects.

The 2-day Forum on Intersex Organising will be facilitated by Patricia Prendiville and will take place on the 3 and 4 September 2011. On the 5th September there will be a Roundtable with ILGA, ILGA-Europe and other organisations, which will be facilitated by Ruth Baldacchino (ILGA Board Member). The Roundtable will provide a space for specifically discussing international matters.

This forum is being organised in partnership by ILGA and ILGA-Europe.

To attend the forum, please complete the application form. In order to ensure a fair representation and taking into consideration the resources available, please note the following eligibility criteria:

1. Preference will be given to those individuals who identify as intersex or have an intersex background; AND/OR
2. Individuals who are working on intersex issues or within intersex organisations.
3. Individuals from the European Region should apply only through ILGA-Europe.
4. Due to financial limitations, we are looking at granting one scholarship per ILGA Region.
