Submission on reform of the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act

IHRA was invited to respond to a public consultation on reform of the Anti-Discrimination Act in Queensland.

We thank the Queensland government for having already introduced amendments to the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 that provide for protections on grounds of sex characteristics. These are expected to soon come into force. We also thank the Queensland government for tabling the proposed new bill.

Intersex Human Rights Australia (IHRA) welcomes the opportunity to comment. In particular, we welcome proposals that avoid introduction of exemptions in sport or religious institutions on grounds of sex characteristics.

We recommend that the Queensland government act to ensure an end to harmful practices in medical settings as a necessary step in addressing discrimination and harm affecting our population.

We also recommend that the Queensland government introduce protections from genetic discrimination.
