Dr. Morgan Carpenter, IHRA’s Executive Director, Honoured in Barcelona Pride Mural

In a vibrant mural created by artist Elsa Velasco in Barcelona, champions of pride, human rights, and equality take centre stage. Elsa described the commission as “heartwarming”, allowing her to paint community members she admires and share the artwork with the people of Barberà.

Featured Figures:

  1. Audre Lorde and Frances Louise-Clayton (Red Panel): Audre Lorde, an acclaimed Black lesbian feminist, writer, and activist, shared a loving and strong long-term relationship with Frances Louise-Clayton, a white psychology professor. Their New York City home, now a designated landmark, holds significance for the LGBTQIA+ community. Gloria Fuertes (Red Panel): Spanish poet Gloria Fuertes, known for her literary contributions and openness about her lesbian identity.

Alok Vaid-Menon (Orange Panel): Alok Vaid-Menon, a gender non-conforming writer, performance artist, and activist, advocates for bodily diversity, gender neutrality, self-determination and for intersectionality and solidarity across movements.Vico Ortiz (Orange Panel): Vico Ortiz, a Puerto Rican actor and drag king, uses their performance as a means of activism.
  1. Morgan Carpenter (Yellow Panel): As the Executive Director of Intersex Human Rights Australia and an Associate Professor at Sydney Health Ethics, Dr. Carpenter is a respected intersex activist, bioethicist, and researcher. His focus lies in human rights and ethics related to the treatment of people with innate variations of sex characteristics.
  2. Community Support (Green Panel): LGBQTIA+ leaders worldwide inspire hope and transformation through their contributions.
  3. Federico García Lorca (Blue Panel): Despite societal challenges, this Spanish poet, playwright, and theatre director fearlessly embraced his queer identity. His legacy symbolises the fight for gay rights.
  4. Cody Daigle-Orians (Purple Panel): An asexual American author, Cody provides compassionate guidance through their book “I Am Ace: Advice on Living Your Best Ace Life.”Yasmin Benoit (Purple Panel): A British model and asexual activist, Yasmin co-founded International Asexuality Day and advocates for asexual rights.Alice Oseman (Purple Panel): Award-winning author and screenwriter Alice Oseman is best known for her Netflix series, Heartstopper.

Elsa Velasco’s colourful mural beautifully honours these remarkable leaders in the LGBQTIA+ world, with our own Dr. Morgan Carpenter representing the intersex cause.
