Congratulations Tony Briffa on winning the President’s Award!
The Thorne Harbour Health Awards were established to honour individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQ+ communities and people living with HIV. Over the years, the awards have recognised a wide range of contributions, from advocacy and volunteer work to leadership and community support.
The Awards for 2024 were announced last night and we are excited to congratulate previous Executive Director of Intersex Human Rights Australia and current Board Member, our own Tony Briffa on winning the President’s Award!
An article on Glam Adelaide wrote: “Tony Briffa, recognised as the world’s first openly intersex mayor, received the prestigious President’s Award. Janet Jukes OAM, President of Thorne Harbour Health, praised Tony for her enduring advocacy. “Tony’s tireless activism has challenged the medical establishment and advocated to governments for the right of intersex children to grow up with dignity, free from unnecessary medical interventions,” she said.”
Tony, we commend you for your outstanding work and commitment over the years and we celebrate you today. Thank you for being a shining light for human rights for all people with innate variations of sex characteristics.
Other people honoured at the event were former Coordinator of the Catholic AIDS Ministry Marg Hayes and President of Positive Life SA Kath Leane who were both awarded Life Membership, The Greig Friday Young Leader Award went to Elvis Martin, an inspiring community leader and refugee migrant. Kellie Greene was honoured for her exceptional contributions to SAMESH’s Poz Lunch and Sean Mulcahy and the Rainbow Local Government group were recognised for promoting inclusivity within Victorian local governments. Angelo Todaro’s eight years of volunteer service with the Community Support program was celebrated and Marc Mendoza received the Special Service Award for his advocacy for LGBTIQA+ and PLHIV communities.
